La mamma, an institution in each family, in Italy especially.
Italians are known around the world for being a little bit mammoni (which means “mama’s boys’) and to stay at home way too long after turning 18 and have our moms do everything for us, but our mammas are really unique! Caring, loving, essential in every aspect of out lives!
Mothers are the glue that keeps every member of the family together, and their role, not often recognised enough, is so culturally important.
In Italy, la Festa della Mamma, falls on the second Sunday of May – while in the UK is usually held on the fourth Sunday of Lent, exactly three weeks before Easter Sunday.
How do we celebrate Mother’s day in Italy?
In all fairness, Mother’s day is not as commercial as in other countries, like the US for example. In Italy we keep it simple.
Usually mothers are not allowed to do anything around the house, so childern and husbands are the ones in charge of food, breakfast especially and making sure everything is nice and tidy for her to just enjoy the day without stress.
There’s not a typical gift for this occasion, most mothers will receive flowers and cards, but there’s one tradition that can’t be missed, especially if there are kids in the family – the Mother’s day poem!
Every Italian child has probably been through this in elementary school, preparing the poem for Mother’s Day with the teacher at school, practising every day for the moment they would be standing in front of the whole family and recite it, usually before eating lunch all together. A great and proud moment of every child’s life and their mothers!
Lunch as well is a big part of this day of celebrations, and it is usually held in the family home, or more recently people have started to prefer the option of taking everyone out for a nice meal in a restaurant, so that Mamma doesn’t have to cook or clean-up!
So this year why don’t you embrace the true Italian lifestyle and bring your mamma and the rest of your family out for a special Sunday lunch with us?
We have put together of a special 3 Course Set Menu £19.95 just for the occasion!
